Silent Killer ( Depression )
Mental health is the current health agenda that is gaining
popularity all over the world due to how misunderstood it has been in society
and the death toll we are presently experiencing.
We are all aware of the cliché ‘health is wealth’ and can
testify to its credibility by the loved ones we have lost due to uncorrected
health issues.
Mental health is the new mantra that is supposedly
understood by medical practitioners and misunderstood by many as a psychological
disorder. Most of our cultures define it as witchcraft.
Thanks be to the health ministries, health organizations,
and media for propelling the advocacy on mental health awareness. This has made
it easier for society to now understand the different types of mental health, their
causes, how to deal with them, prevention, and how to also provide medication.
Depression is the most controversial disorder and one that easily
goes unnoticed. We have lost the most high-profile individuals due to the
stigma followed by admitting to having depression and seeking therapy.
Despite being in an era where therapy is the new trend, our society has not yet embraced the power of trust and opening up to a specialist.
The problem is that we know there is a problem but we ignore
it, since communications seems to be the key but it is being held back by
conforming to the norms of the society. You have to be strong, face your
challenges and move forward which is the easiest thing to say.
Instead of facing the issues we are somehow conditioned to
ignore the elephant in the room. Reason to only accommodate those around you.
people pleasing.
We are not only losing young folks but a greater number due
to depression. As obvious no one really cares and we really don’t want to
concern ourselves with other people’s issues, which is another reason to prove
the validity of the changes we are encountering as a society in these current
days, which is detaching from humanity.
Recently we have had cases of young people drowning in
alcohol, while some committing suicide. It is sad, that most responses came as
a backlash to how irresponsible most youths are not realizing there is
something wrong.
Times have changed and things are no longer operating like
in the eighties. We talk about more career opportunities, yes and we are glad
but the employment opportunities are limited, same young people, are thriving in
the invention and creativity sector and are now limited due to the taxes they
have to pay for utilizing their own ideas and resources, exploitation from organizations
in the name of experience and exposure for months without a guarantee of employment
is another, an unpaid internship is a docket that’s rubbed at its mention.
With all these financial and career challenges, they are
termed a weak generation since they can’t keep up with the modern world, the
major factor being finances and employment.
We can see their compulsion in social media. The majority are
displaying their start-ups, sharing their creativity and urge to go after their
dreams but the system seems to be deeming their light and power at every opportunity
they create.
We watch them and shame them for falling back to alcohol instead
of finding a solution or providing an environment where they can thrive professionally
and grow at a personal level.
We all have the tenacity to have a better life but sadly we
are living in times beyond survival mode. Can we take a break and figure out how
we want to leave the world, just like Michael Jackson pleaded in his song ‘Heal
the World’?
