Things I Had to Learn and Work on Before Becoming a Mum
Motherhood is beautiful, but it is also one of the greatest responsibilities life can give. Before stepping into this role, I realized that it wasn’t just about preparing for sleepless nights, diapers, or feeding schedules—it was about preparing myself as a whole woman. I had to learn, unlearn, and work on different aspects of myself to create the foundation I needed. Here are some of the most important things I had to embrace and work on before becoming a mum:
1. Emotional Stability
Children feel what their mothers feel. I had to learn how to manage my emotions better, remain calm in stressful situations, and not let anger or anxiety spill over. Emotional stability has become my anchor—helping me to be present and balanced for my child.
2. Mental Strength
Motherhood is demanding. From labor to sleepless nights to balancing personal goals, I had to build resilience. Strengthening my mind has helped me face challenges with courage instead of fear.
3. Spirituality
I leaned into my spirituality to find peace and guidance. Motherhood isn’t just physical and emotional—it’s deeply spiritual. My faith continues to give me strength and wisdom to raise my child with love and purpose.
4. Mindset
I had to shift my mindset from being just an individual to being a caregiver, a nurturer, and a role model. This meant embracing growth, patience, and understanding that everything would not always go as planned.
5. Embracing Discernment
Not every piece of advice or opinion is meant for me. I had to sharpen my discernment—to know what to accept, what to ignore, and what truly works for me and my child.
6. Working on My Weaknesses and Empowering My Strengths
No one is perfect, and motherhood makes that very clear. I had to accept my flaws, work on areas that needed growth, and lean on my strengths to keep moving forward.
7. Understanding the Cost of Motherhood
Motherhood is rewarding, but it comes with sacrifices—financial, emotional, and physical. I had to come to terms with the costs involved, not just in money, but in time, energy, and lifestyle changes.
8. Building the Foundation of My Career
I realized that as much as motherhood is fulfilling, I also needed to secure my future and my child’s future. Strengthening my career path before becoming a mum gave me the confidence to provide and balance both roles.
9. Self-Discovery
I took time to know myself—my passions, my triggers, my strengths, and my identity outside of motherhood. This self-awareness has helped me not to lose myself while raising my child.
10. Healing My Relationship With My Mum
Motherhood opened my eyes to the struggles my mum must have faced. Healing that relationship allowed me to break cycles, learn from her, and walk into motherhood with a lighter heart.
Becoming a mum required more than just waiting for the right time—it required intentional growth. The journey of preparing myself emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and even financially has made me stronger and more grounded. Motherhood is not about being perfect, but about being prepared, aware, and willing to grow with your child every step of the way.
